Return

Insofar as the major Bluestocking, Mary Wollstonecraft supported the Jacobins of the French Revolution, the leaders of the English government: William Pitt (the younger), Edmund Burke, etc. opposed most of the Bluestockings. The highly conservative leaders of the English government supported the majority view of males that feared women as qualified as men (or more qualified) would undermine male privilege. These men also feared women gaining economic independence. Hence the leaders of the English government attacked (with due respect to chivalry) by simply using ridicule and satire.

"I think one never heard of any body, above the degree of an idiot, who took pleasure in being so dressed out with the very rags and ribbons of vanity."

In any case, Catherine Macaulay broke the stereotype of women in that she wrote the five-volume "The History of England from the accession of James I. to that of the Brunswick line".
